About the project

Indoor Swimming Pool - Listed Building

This private leisure facility is a high quality project that includes: a games room, a pool hall, a shower facility and gym area. The project adjoins a Grade 2 Listed farmhouse property in an area of outstanding natural beauty in Rural Herefordshire.

The design accommodates existing circulation, to and from the main house, as well as scale and character of the listed building.

To achieve this connection a lightweight glazed link is used, attaching the farmhouse to the new build. This link provides an opportunity to introduce colour to brighten up a small space; even on a dull winters day access from the main house to the pool hall is warm and inviting, through use of colour.

Local stone is used to clad the exterior of the new building, and large plate glass areas used to maximize day light into the interior of the building.

Working closely with steel fabricator, Thomas Forge, a sculptural staircase was created, providing a showpiece staircase sculpture that appears to float above the floor.

Natural riven slate, warm red and orange tones, and tiles are used extensively throughout the interior, for flooring, wall finishes, and feature spaces. A deck level surface is used to maximise maximum water depth, saving on excavation depth, and improving water quality. This seamless waterline, with the pool hall surround transforms the interior space into a luxurious feel.

Indoor pools can be very expensive and it is important to get the pool engineering, and specification correct, as errors down the line are expensive to put right.
